Completing your Self Assessment of Service Statement (SASS): Childcare and play services

How to complete your SASS if you provide a childcare and play service.

Childcare and play providers are required to complete a self assessment and an annual review of the quality of care at their service. This information tells us about your service and the system you have for monitoring, reviewing and improving the quality of care given to children and is used to inform our inspection of your service.

SASS is in two parts. Part one took place last summer and was available to complete using CSSIW Online:

Part one – annual data collection

If you did not complete and submit SASS part one this may have been recorded against your service(s).

If you did not complete and submit your SASS part one last summer you must now complete both SASS parts one and two using CSSIW Online. (External link)

You will not be able to complete your SASS part two without firstly submitting your SASS part one.

Part two -includes completing a Quality of Care Review

Part two is now available to complete and submit using CSSIW Online (External link). The deadline to submit part two is 28 July 2017.

  • How to prepare for part two

    You must:

    1. Read our guidance about completing your Quality of Care Review
    2. Download our Quality of Care Review template
    3. Check that your Statement of Purpose is up to date

  • Guidance about your Quality of Care Review

    It is important that you read the guidance to prepare for completing your Quality of Care Review.

    We have developed a template for you to use. The template is optional, but for consistency we strongly recommend that you use it.

  • Why do I need to complete a Quality of Care Review?

    You have a legal duty to review the quality of the care you provide. Self-evaluation is also important to help you consider the best way to maintain and improve your service.

  • I did not complete or submit SASS part one, what do I need to do?

    You must complete both SASS parts one and two using CSSIW Online. (External link)  You will not be able to complete SASS part two without firstly submitting your SASS part one.

    You are required by law to complete a self assessment and an annual review of the quality of care at your service.

  • Guidance about SASS part one

    It is important that you read the factsheet and guidance before completing SASS part one.

  • How we use information from the SASS

    The inspector will use this information to:

    • plan for inspection;
    • influence what aspects of your service to prioritise and inspect;
    • inform the number of inspectors we might send to inspect your service;
    • as evidence when we make judgments (and ratings) about your service; and
    • confirm that your registration details are current and correct.
