Adult providers: you will need to re-register with us next year

The Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act will replace the Care Standards Act.

If you are already registered to provide a care home, children’s home, domiciliary care, secure accommodation or residential family centre, you will need to re-register with us in 2018-19.

Existing providers

At the moment, the above list of providers are registered with us under the Care Standards Act 2000 (External link).

In 2016, the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act was passed, which changes the way that we regulate and inspect social care in Wales.

From April 2018, the law comes into force, but we need to work with you to ensure you’re prepared for the changes.

Please note this change does not apply to childcare and play, and child minders.

New providers

If you are applying to register a care home, children’s home, domiciliary care, secure accommodation or residential family centre with us, you need to be aware that the Regulation and Inspection of Social Care (Wales) Act 2016 comes into force in April 2018, and the above services will have to re-register at that point.

We recommend you consider our timescales for processing applications before you submit. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Help for you

In October, we will publish detailed guidance for existing providers about the re-registration process.

We will be referring to re-registration as “transition”.

This transition guidance will explain the steps that providers will need to take in order to re-register with us.

You do not need to do anything now, but we want to give you as much information as possible so you’re ready for the change.

Later this year, there’ll be more information, advice and support for providers, to guide you through the process.

Make sure you keep an eye on our website and read our newsletter to keep up-to-date.

Don’t forget to read the frequently asked questions available on the Social Care Wales Information and Learning Hub. (External link)

Checking your details

Because of the changes happening as part of the new law, it’s important that we check providers’ registration details.

For this reason, we’ll be carrying out a short online Self Assessment of Service (SASS) exercise in the autumn. We will be checking providers’ registration details; encouraging services to get online; and find out how you intend to register under the new law.

Events

We’ll be holding regional provider events in the autumn to give you more information about the transition process. Keep an eye on our website for details about these.

In the mean time, take a look at the presentation given at our events between May and July.
